Wednesday, November 17, 2004 JAPAN — Japan’s Diet has proposed to reduce economic assistance given to China. Economic aid is currently given in the form of grants and technical assistance under the Official development assistance (ODA) program. ODA contributes to the development of the economies of states harmed by Japan during World War II, an approach pursued not only as restitution but to improve regional stability and to secure scarce natural resource trade. Assistance to mainland China will total $8.9bn this year, making Japan an unusual second to the United States in aid. This is down 30% from 1997, and is the fourth year-on-year decline as of 2003. Loans to China total $30bn to date. The ODA has been a key feature in Sino-Japanese economic and diplomatic relations. It was begun in the 1980s as China “opened up” to foreign investment. It is in part restitution for damage inflicted on…

Friday, July 23, 2021 With five active cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19, South Australia begun a one-week lockdown on Monday. Announcing the lockdown, state Premier Steven Marshall declared “we have no alternative but to impose some fairly heavy and immediate restrictions”. The first case out of South Australia’s active cases was presented to Modbury Hospital on Sunday night, having returned from Argentina earlier this month. The fifth, which Premier Marshall noted as “far more worrying”, visited The Greek on Halifax restaurant at the same time as someone who was later confirmed to be carrying the virus. Chief Public Health Officer for the state Nicola Spurrier said “if anyone has been at The Greek on Halifax they need to get into quarantine and get tested”. In accordance with new regulations, there are only five reasons for South Australians to leave home: essential work, shopping for essential goods such as…

Friday, February 6, 2009 United States swimmer Michael Phelps has been banned from competition and his training stipend revoked for three months by USA Swimming after Phelps was photographed smoking from a glass pipe, often used for smoking cannabis. The picture was published last Sunday by British tabloid News of the World. USA Swimming, which is the governing body of swimming in the United States, however said that no “anti-doping” rules had been violated. “This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” it stated. “Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.” HAVE YOUR SAY Should Phelps have been punished at all? If…

Sunday, December 20, 2009 A conservative Democratic United States senator has agreed to supply the key 60th vote needed for passage of a sweeping health care reform package. Senate Democrats have reached a breakthrough in their struggle to pass sweeping heath care reform legislation, lining up the 60 votes needed to overcome fierce Republican opposition. Senators met Saturday in Washington, D.C. during a driving snowstorm in a frenzied effort to move forward on President Barack Obama’s top domestic priority. The spotlight was on moderate Democratic Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who had been the last holdout as Senate Democrats raced against the clock and against determined Republican opposition to pass their health care bill by their self-imposed deadline of December 25th, Christmas. Change is never easy, but change is what is necessary in America today and and that is why I intend to vote for cloture, I intend to vote…

More On This Topic: Income Protection Tax Deductible By Kevin Cross I Mobile credit card processing has been revolutionized. Not only can you accept credit card payments by phone, you can accept credit card payments by cell phone. This is going to change the entire way the mobile merchant does business, and every mobile merchant will do business this way because it is so irresistibly affordable. The makers of this technology understand the professionalism of being able to accept credit card payments, and the barriers presented to the mobile merchant. Theyve been able to seamlessly bridge that gap by providing a way for you to quickly, easily and affordably process credit card transactions by phone. Most mobile merchants don’t take credit cards at all because of how expensive it is. When they have a credit card transaction, they still have to do a batch report on the terminal at the…

Friday, May 18, 2012 Bruce, Canberra — In an exclusive interview with Wikinews, Australian Paralympians Evan O’Hanlon and Scott Reardon discussed the increased professionalism of their sport, and the challenges elite athletes now face in securing sponsorship deals. O’Hanlon, with the support of his Australian teammates, is on a mission to professionalise Paralympic athletics. He is leading a charge to encourage runners to cover the logos on shoes they wear to training and in competition because he believes that many people who see him in pictures when he wins world records think his shoes are paid for by sponsors; they are not. Paralympic athletic competitors must buy their own shoes; while Australian Paralympic competitors receive support from the government, they still must pay for things their abled-bodied counterparts would not. O’Hanlon and Reardon believe unless competitors organise as a group and act together, they will not change the sponsorship landscape…
