Bali nine lawyer challenges police on legality of drug case
Wednesday, October 12, 2005 The lawyer for one of the members of the so called Bali Nine is claiming he will challenge the legality of the indictment against his client. Adnan Wirawan, the lawyer of Martin Stephens from Wollongong, says his client has been unfairly accused as being the ring leader of an alleged conspiracy to smuggle drugs: “He’s a human suitcase… he was being told what to do.” Stephens appeared in Denpasar District Court on Wednesday. The prosecution claimed that Stephens and Renae Lawrence, from Newcastle, had their hotel and trip to Bali paid for by the accused mastermind, Andrew Chan. Stephens’ mother, Michelle, was in court for her son’s first appearance and says she will support him throughout his trial: “I’m here to support my son, and I love him and I believe in him. American Museum of Natural History removes statue of Theodore Roosevelt
Friday, January 21, 2022 The American Museum of Natural History in New York City removed a statue of the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, on Thursday following over a year of controversy. The statue, officially the “Equestrian Statue of Theodore Roosevelt,” depicts Roosevelt riding a horse flanked by a Native American and an African American at either side on foot. The statue had stood at the steps of the museum since 1940 as a tribute to the former president who the museum notes “as a devoted naturalist and author of works on natural history”. The museum requested the statue be removed in June 2020 following global protests over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Wednesday, March 30, 2005 The owners of the Noodle House Restaurant of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), Canada were overwhelmed by community support Tuesday when the restaurant overflowed with customers, cards, flowers, and personal pleas to not leave the province. According to CBC News Prince Edward Island, the recent outpouring of support occurred after Tommy and Lina Ko, the restaurant owners, announced they would close the restaurant and leave the province following an incident two weeks ago, when groups of up to 200 teens from two nearby schools surrounded the restaurant, pelting it with snowballs, and threatening the Kos. Oil spill hits Australia’s Sunshine coastline
Sunday, March 15, 2009 200,000 litres of oil leaked into waters off the coast of Brisbane from the Pacific Adventurer when their fuel tanks were damaged in rough seas on Wednesday. The figure is about ten times higher than the original estimate of twenty thousand litres of oil. The devastating diesel oil spill has spread along 60 kilometres (37 miles) of the Queensland coast. In addition, 31 containers with 620 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser flew overboard during the violent storm. Questions are being asked why the Hong Kong cargo ship was out in seas with nine meter waves caused by Cyclone Hamish, a Category 5 tropical cyclone, as well as why the fertiliser containers were not properly secured. Indian Railway: all-women crew steers Tippu Express ahead of International Women’s Day
Friday, March 6, 2020 Yesterday, an all-women crew ran the Mysuru–Bengaluru Tippu Express in the Indian state of Karnataka. The state-run Indian Railways launched this event ahead of International Women’s Day, for promoting gender equality at work places. B Shiva Parvathi was running the train as loco pilot (locomotive pilot), and 22-year-old Rangoli Patil was her loco co-pilot. The train left Mysore Junction railway station at 11:30 am IST (0600 UTC), covering a distance of 139km to reach KSR Bangalore station. The train had banners on it which mentioned “International Women’s Day Celebration”.
