Saturday, June 28, 2008 Louisiana Republican Governor Bobby Jindal signed a controversial bill hailed by intelligent design supporters, such as the Discovery Institute, and Louisiana Family Forum, a creationist group. Critics of the bill, including several major science organizations, say it allows for the teaching of “creationism” in public schools. The law, Louisiana Science Education Act, allows teachers to use “supplemental materials” when discussing evolution, but it does not state what the materials would be. Citing the 1987 Supreme Court ruling in Edwards v. Aguillard, “Louisiana has a long and unfortunate history of trying to substitute dogma for science in classrooms,” said Reverend Barry W. Lynn, an executive director for Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Sunday, January 3, 2010 At least sixty people have been confirmed dead after mudslides in southeastern Brazil, mostly on Ilha Grande, caused by torrential rainfall. Rescue efforts are still continuing in the state of Rio de Janeiro for people feared to be buried under houses, which collapsed due to the deluge of mud and rain. Rescuers used shovels and heavy machinery to dig through the rubble. Colonel Jerri Andrade, who is supervising the rescuers, commented on the current status of rescue efforts. “The weather is improving, which helps us with the search, but we won’t rest as long as we suspect that there are more bodies underneath the remains.” More rain is forecast in the days ahead, making additional mudslides a possibility. The attack compromised as many as 24 million accounts. Personal data may have been taken, but credit card numbers are encrypted and thus cannot be stolen. Information that may have been compromised includes customers shipping addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, account passwords and the last four digits of any credit card used. Though credit card numbers are encrypted by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, other personal information is often not. Friday, October 30, 2020 Retired teacher Brian T. Carroll, the presidential nominee of the American Solidarity Party, answered some questions about his campaign from Wikinews accredited reporter William S. Saturn. Carroll is an Evangelical Christian. During a 44 year career in education, he mainly taught history to middle school children in California. He spent nine years in Colombia teaching children whose missionary parents were stationed there. Carroll joined the Solidarity Party and ran for Congress in 2018 for California’s 22nd congressional seat.  He finished the nonpartisan blanket primary in fifth with 1.3 percent of the vote. Carroll received the Solidarity Party’s 2020 presidential nomination in September 2019 over two other contenders: candidate Joshua Perkins and past Wikinews interviewee Joe Schriner.
